ACCT Philly Dog Kennels at Capacity, Offering Free Dog Adoptions
Adopt a large dog for free through Sunday, July 30th

(Philadelphia, PA) July 27, 2017 – The Animal Care & Control Team of Philadelphia (ACCT Philly) dog kennels are at full capacity. To encourage adoptions, ACCT Philly will waive all adoption fees for dogs weighing more than 35 pounds from now through Sunday, July 30.

While getting dogs adopted is priority number one, ACCT Philly also wants to make it clear that dog surrenders should be avoided whenever possible.

“If you need to surrender a pet, please explore all possible alternatives before surrendering to ACCT Philly,” said Vincent Medley, ACCT Philly’s Executive Director. “We cannot overstate the importance of avoiding surrenders.”

Even if space is severely limited, ACCT Philly cannot turn away stray or surrendered pets because it is an open-admission city contracted animal shelter.

ACCT Philly monitors space availability multiple times a day to help manage this difficult task, but due to the unpredictable nature of incoming pets, the animal population can suddenly spike. If exits do not keep up, space becomes increasingly difficult to manage.

This happened on Wednesday, said Fitzgerald. “Close to 70 dogs were brought in since Monday and adoptions have been slow.”

Staff members are taking all humane steps available to help dogs leave the shelter, including offering future surrender dates to owners, lowering kennel dividers to create nine additional living spaces, and working overtime to contact rescues. Despite these efforts, intakes are outpacing exits – leaving ACCT Philly with difficult decisions to make.

“We have been fighting to avoid dog euthanasia for the past four days, but kennel space is now completely full,” said Carolyn Fitzgerald, Lifesaving Director for ACCT Philly. “We are at the point of needing to euthanize for space, but can significantly lower, or possibly avoid, loss of life if people come adopt dogs now. Owners should also avoid surrendering dogs at all costs.”

Resources to help owners avoid bringing their pet to ACCT Philly are available on the shelter’s website here.
