How to help
Thank you for wanting to help ACCT as we shift our operations in response to COVID 19. There are many ways to help, but above all, we are in dire need of fosters and adopters for our dogs so that we can decrease the number of animals in our care.
Please check out the album on our Facebook page of all the animals needing to be adopted, fostered or rescued, and also follow us on twitter and Instagram and spread the word!
Hours
ACCT Philly will continue to have essential staff working at the shelter to care for the animals and perform associated functions from 10am-6pm, however the door will be locked and adoptions, fosters and intakes will be done differently:
Intakes
- Animal intakes will remain on emergency basis. If you have a pet who you would like to surrender, we ask that you try to keep them as long as possible, and e-mail helpdesk@acctphilly.org if there are resources such as pet food etc that we could provide you with, that will make that possible.
- If you have an emergency, please call 267-385-3800 and choose option 1. This will connect you directly to the Dispatcher and they can arrange to have an animal protection office meet them if it is an emergency.
Adopting
- UPDATE: As of May 8th, we are totally booked on adoption appointments! We want to allow our staff time to catch up, but will update both here and on social media when new appointment slots become available.
*If you are interested in an animal in foster care, please e-mail the foster parent listed on the pet’s profile or adopt@acctphilly.org
Thank you for your interest! - The appointment will be done over the phone. If it’s determined the pet you’re interested in is a good fit (or together, you and the counselor decide a different pet is a better match) you will receive the paperwork via e-mail, and have that reviewed over the call. Once approved, we will schedule for one of our animal protection officers to bring the pet to you! Please know that the drop offs are being piloted, so we may change this process if issues arise with it.
Fostering
- We are so grateful to everyone who signed up for appointments for fostering. We do still need fosters, however at this time we need long term fosters, which means a commitment to fostering for a month or more.
- Please fill out the foster application online (cat application here, dog application here) and schedule an appointment here. We know right now there aren’t many appointments available and are working on making more available.
- At the time of your appointment, you’ll be counseled over the phone and once a foster pet is selected, we will e-mail you the paperwork. After that, we will arrange for one of our animal protection officers to drop off the dog or cat for you.
Rescue
Our Lifesaving team will continue to promote our urgent and adoptable animals to our Love Local Partners daily, and the process to confirm rescue placement for an animal has not changed.
Love Local Partners may email our Lifesaving team if there are any animals that they may be able to accommodate, or if any additional information is needed or services provided to make an informed transfer decision.
What is changing is the hand off of the animal:
- All hand offs will occur in a designated outdoor area, on campus, as opposed to inside the shelter. We will be asking our Partners to send a representative to ACCT Philly campus so that our Lifesaving Counselor is able to hand the animal to them in an open and controlled environment.
- Communication regarding specifics of arrival and hand-off location will be made with our Lifesaving staff directly, at the time of confirmation of the animal. We will not be able to have rescues come into the building.
Pet Pantry
Previously, our pet pantry operated twice a month, distributing thousands of pounds of dog and cat food and litter. We know that during this unprecedented time, some pet owners may need additional help and we are therefore changing out pet pantry to be daily, by appointment. You can read more about that here.
Donations
Right now we are not able to accept drop offs of donations but ask that you please consider ordering items from our Amazon wish list, particularly canned cat food, litter and dog food for our pet pantry. ACCT Philly is a nonprofit organization and we encourage anyone in s a position to do so to please donate to support our work during this uncertain time here.
